In 1846, a prosperous merchant named Ygnacio Palomares donated an enormous amount of land to the City and County of San Francisco. In gratitude for his munificence towards its citizens, on this divinely ordained occasion – September 19th – the city’s name was formally altered from ‘Yerba Buena’ to ‘San Francisco’.

During this period, California had become an indisputable part of the United States – a decision reached at the 1849 Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo ending the Mexican-American War. However, the legislation that would establish California as a state did not come into effect until 1850; prior to then it remained under U.S. federal rule.
